| 1 | Город был уездный, отстоявший от губернского на полтораста (1), | The town was a district-town, 150 (versts) distant from the county-town, |

| 3 | Жили в нём чиновники, купцы и мещане, квартировал драгунский полк. (3) | (There) lived in It civil servants, tradesmen, and middle-class people ; a regiment of dragoons had its quarters (there). |
