1 Учить (imperfective) : to learn or teach. Ученик учит русский язык: the pupil learns Russian. Учитель учит русскому языку: the master teaches Russian (dative). Учиться (imperfective), to learn, study. Я учусь русскому: I study Russian (dative). Выучить (perf.) : to learn completely. Я выучил урок: I have done learning my lesson. Изучить (perf.), изучать (imperf.), to learn entirely. Я учился русскому языку, но его не изучил ещё: I have studied Russian, but I have not yet learnt it Научить: to teach completely, show. Научите меня, как это делается: Show me how this is done. Учение, study; наука, science, knowledge; учёный, the scholar, learned man; научный: scientific. |

2 Сахзавод is an example of the "bolshevised"
words, formed since 1918, chiefly for official nomenclature. Сахар, sugar, and завод, factory. The former word was сахарный завод; the two words squeezed into one give : сахзавод. Likewise, we see, e.g. : местком: местный комитет, local committee; колхоз: коллективное хозяйство: collective agricultural exploitation; внешторг: внешняя торговля, foreign trade; интурист: иностранный турист, foreign tourist; Чека: Чрезвычайная комиссия, "extraordinary committee". |

4 Брать, взять, to take, form a pair though from
different roots. Imperfective : брать, беру, берёт, берут. Perfective : взять, возьму, возьмёт, возьмут. Взятие крепости: the capture of a fortress. Этот чиновник берёт взятки: This official takes bribes. |

5 Падать (imperf.), пасть
and упасть (perf.) : to fall. Дети часто падают: Children often fall. Рабочий упал с крыши: The workman fell from the roof. Берегитесь, вы упадёте: Mind ! you're going to fall. Нападать, напасть: to attack, fall upon. Собака напала на нищего: the dog attacked the beggar (нищий). Попадать, попасть: to fall on, or reach one's target, or to happen to be (in a place) : Откуда он к вам попал? From where did he fall upon you? Он стрелял в меня но не попал: He shot at me, but did not hit me. Попадаться, попасться, to get caught. Вы ещё раз попались! You get caught once more! Он каждый раз попадается: he gets caught (taken in) every time. |

б Умирать, (imp.), умереть
(perf.) : to die. Я умираю, I die (am dying) ; я умру, I shall die. Он умер, она умерла, he, she is dead. Мертвец: the dead man; смерть: death. Мёртвый: dead (adject.). Мёртвое Море: The Dead Sea. Замирать, замереть mean "to nearly die" : У меня замерло сердце : my heart stopped. Он замирает от страха: he is dying with fear. |

7 Сон, sleep or dream, gives
сонный, sleepy. The о in сон falls in the declension : без сна, without sleep; во сне, in dream or sleep. Я никогда не вижу снов, I never make [see] dreams. Сны: dreams. Заснуть (perf.), to fall asleep; проснуться (perf.), to wake up. Спать (imperf.), to sleep. Я сплю, он спит, они спят. Он спит; давно уже заснул и не проснётся до утра : He sleeps; he fell asleep (a) long (while) ago, and will not wake up until morning. Будить (imperf.), разбудить (perf.) : to awake (somebody). Я сам проснулся, никто меня не разбудил: I awoke of myself, nobody woke me up. Одолжите мне будтльник: lend me an alarm-clock. |

8 Ум, mind, intelligence; умный, intelligent; умная собака: a clever dog. Умница: a shrewd, clever person. — Разум: reason; разумный: reasonable. — Остроумный: sharp-witted, witty (острый : sharp). Разумеется, That goes without saying. Сойти с ума: to go out of one's mind, to go mad. Где, куда. - Куда is : to where, whither. Где вы? Where are you? - Куда вы? Where are you going to? Compound adverbs : нигде, никуда, nowhere. Я его нигде не вижу: I see him nowhere. — Он никуда не ходит: he goes nowhere. Откуда? From where? - Откуда он пришёл? From where did he come? — Ниоткуда : from nowhere. Здесь: here. |
